Artist Bio

Vanessa Gomez is a student at Northern Illinois University pursuing a B.S. in Art and minors in Geology, Geography, and Art History. The closeness of NIU allowed her to pursue her many passions in the art and science fields, while also allowing her to stay close to family and friends. Pursuing an education in art has taught her the fundamental skills of art production and how to view art through a different lens. Learning about these topics has also encouraged her to pursue her own creative style that pushes the boundaries of discomfort. Vanessa will graduate at the end of 2024 and continue to pursue a career in the art field.

Artist Statement

When it comes to art, I like to have a connecting factor that links pieces together. My thoughts work like an evidence board and that tends to come across in what I create. Sometimes this connection is the subject matter and sometimes it’s a more subtle idea that may not be as obvious. My approach to art making starts by sitting down in front of a blank canvas or paper and letting my thoughts take over. I never sketch out ideas beforehand because I always end up going in a completely different direction than what I sketched out first. The majority of my work centers around the theme of fear and discomfort. I create pieces that relate to more extreme emotions because those are the subjects that I think are the most fun to create and that spark the most thoughts. Because my art leans more toward my personal side, my overall goal with art is to make something that I can connect with and that which really captures my thoughts and feelings about a subject. However, I do enjoy hearing other people’s interpretations of what I create and what they think it means.
